Democracy
Democracy is one of the most common types of government in the modern world. The intent of this paper is to explore and discuss the basic elements of democracy, and historical aspects within the Lord of the Flies. Democracy is a government in which the majority rules. Allowing the people to choose their leaders and to hold their leaders accountable for their policies and their conduct in office (Zoe, 2). A political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections (Zoe, 4). One advantage…show more content… There are some historical examples of democracy that relate to the Lord of the Flies. Like Aung San Suu Kyi and the democratization of Bruma (Miskelly and Noce, 244). Aung San Suu Kyi wanted an end to military rule so she organized democratization amongst the Burmese (Miskelly and Noce, 244). She was later arrested by the military because they feared her success in her new rule of democracy (Miskelly and Noce, 244). This relates to the Lord of the Flies by how Kyi tried to have a civilized and not so harsh government but then was arrested, just like how Piggy was killed because of his opinions on how the group should be more civilized and not savages (Golding). Another example relating to the Lord of the Flies is how democracy and capitalism went head to head at some point in Germany during the aftermath of World War II (Miskelly and Noce, 35). Both Capitalism and Democracy were favored by the Western world and go in tandem (Miskelly and Noce, 35), but, of course, capitalism took over Germany leaving them in a state of disrepair. Similarly, democracy was keeping the boys alive until Jack forced dictatorship on the group. This led to the group splitting up and causing more death (Golding).
