Shakespeare presents women in their respective place as an outsider to the extent that they follow renaissance beliefs of being silent, chaste, and obedient to their husbands and all men in general. In contrast Pinter presents women as outsiders to the extent they don’t follow the social norms present in Othello. This is due to the modern social change happening in the mid 1960’s where women had more rights, an opportunity not present in 1604. Desdemona is a victim of the Venetian patriarchal society simply because of her gender and the fact that she adheres to the renaissance beliefs. The courtesan prostitute who in modern days will be regarded a ‘tart’- a derogatory adjective often used to describe women such as Ruth in the Homecoming. Bianca is an outsider because she doesn’t conform to the renaissance beliefs of being chaste. Her occupation as a prostitute makes her vulnerable to patriarchal power. The only power Bianca possesses is sexual power shared with Ruth in the Homecoming. This form of sexual power is ultimately down to the men who are irresponsibly using her body as a form of pleasure. Thomas Coryat (1611) states ‘’courtesans were utterly rooted out of the city’’ while William Davies (1614) states ‘’[Italian women were] very lewd and wicked, for even in the ancient city of Rome, where there are many thousands of lewd living woman that pay monthly unto the pope for the sinful use of their wicked bodies.’’ Davies derogatory statement containing the adjective ‘’lewd’’ which has sexual connotations and the noun ‘’Rome’’ which has religious connotations overall present women as prostitutes and whores. Bianca’s first appearance is in Act 3 Scene 4, Cassio’s uses the interrogative sentence ‘’ what make you from home?’’ to question Bianca’s long distance from home. As like Bianca Ruth has sexual power which gives her an opportunity to depart from her married life full of rocks, insects and stones’’ into a life where she becomes independent. For example in Act 2 during the proposal Lenny offers Ruth a ‘’ flat’’. The noun ‘’flat’’ is a symbol of independence. Typically during the period of the mid 1960’s women would not have had that sort of asset as their own due the fact it was the male who was brining in the income for the household hence the male’s ability to hold the women as his possession.
