Introduction France, officially the French Republic, is the largest country located in Western Europe with several overseas metropolitan territory and islands located on other continents and in the Indian Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. France is the mainland in Europe, borders the English Channel, Bay of Biscay, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Monaco, Andorra, and Luxembourg. France extends from the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean due to its shape, it is often known in French as l’Hexagone. Lunch and dinner are the main meals of the day. Formal four course meals consist of a starter course, a salad, a main course and finally a cheese or dessert course. Sports and hobbies Football is the most favoured sport in France. Other popular sports played in France are rugby union, cycling, tennis, handball, basketball and sailing. It is notable for holding and winning the FIFA World Cup in 1998, and held the annual cycling race Tour de France, also the tennis Grand Slam tournament the French Open. Sport is encouraged in school and local sports clubs receive support from the local governments. Professional sailing is organized world race which starts every four years from the French Atlantic coast. Fashion Clean lines, slim figures and simple clothes are the hallmark of French fashion design. Paris is centre of an important number of fashion shows. Some of the world's biggest fashion houses (Chanel) have their headquarters in France. The fashion press Vogue and Elle and fashion shows are very famous. Fashion industry of France has come under increasing competition from London, New York, Milan and Tokyo and the French has increasingly adopted foreign (particularly American) fashions.
