Empire has taken the world by storm with its thrilling storyline. But it has also captivated the eyes of many looking in what’s new in fashion. Characters come into scenes and have viewers wondering who they are wearing and where they can get it. Jana Matheson says, “it’s going to have an effect that’s the same as, if not greater than, ‘Sex and the City” (as cited in Tran, 2015). With a finale reaching 23.1 million views, the show just might. The show also has the help of costume designer Paolo Nieddu, who is known for his styling of both “Ugly Betty and the movie version of “Sex in the City”. Makeup and hair artist are also getting the share of fame after styling Grace Gealy’s character Anika Calhoun with ‘beat’ makeup that people are dying to get their hands on to copy the looks. Empire was highly anticipated before even airing after having names like Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard star in it. The show brings in the new trend of diversity to television and that’s what really brings in the audience. While the fashions do give the show spark, the freshness of the show is what caught viewers attentions back when they were still shopping the sales rack in the first season. For a show with a mainly not white cast to be in the spotlight is something meaningful for a lot of people of color. This is how the show was able to become a popular fashion trendsetter. African Americans wanted fashion on other African Americans.
