Pain is defined as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage.” (IASP, 2011) Pain is subjective, therefore the presence and intensity of pain is determined by the perceiver. This perception can be effected by psychological factors as well as physical factors and it is always considered to be true if described (verbally and/or nonverbally) by the perceiver.
