Playing with Electricity Have you ever wanted to catch lightning from the sky? Benjamin Franklin did catch lightning from the sky. In 1749 he invented the lightning rod and changed the world of electricity. He did hundreds of remarkable things in his life and he was a key part of his community. Benjamin Franklin was an author, scientist, inventor, and a civic leader that contributed not only to science, but also his community, and made a difference in the world. After they had wrote it, Franklin was the one that proof read it. There was many men at the constitutional convention, but Franklin was a respected figure there. He was an outstanding citizen and always help make decisions when America was going through hard times. “He had no intention to speak anything but the truth” (Schiff). This was one of many things he did for America. Franklin said “ The constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness, you have to catch it yourself”. They thought that Jove would hurl this thunderbolt at his enemies and people that sin. This weapon they called “joves thunderbolt” was just lightning. This terrified everyone, and no one would go outside during storms. It made grown men get under their beds when it thundered, but not Franklin. Instead of being scared Franklin looked for a more logical explanation for this strange light. he did several electricity experiments. The first experiments were not famous because he did not conduct much information about the electricity. later on in his life in 1752 is when Franklin did the famous kite experiment. “Franklins discovery of electricity was original and groundbreaking including his invention of the battery” (“Profiles in greatness; Benjamin Franklin”). He took a homemade kite made out of silk and put an iron point on the top of the kite and a key on the bottom. He went out on a rainy day and flew the kite into the air after a long wait he brought the kite in and touched the key and it sparked. Franklin got the idea that lightning made electricity. He trusted himself enough that he devoted most of his life on this experiment. He was a very busy man and he still made time for this experiment.
