Battling- Battling can be defined as, a”fight or [a] struggle tenaciously to achieve or resist something“. In the hip-hop culture specifically, battling is a verbal war between two or more individuals that rap back and forth trying to be better the previous person. In the movie 8 mile, two rappers Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith and Papa Doc freestyle for the crowds’ affection by boasting about oneself while also attacking each other’s personal life and insulting each other. For example, “B-Rabbit” raps, “Don't ever try to judge me dude, you don't know what the fuck I've been through, but I know something about you, you went to Cranbrook - that's a private school. What's the matter, dog? You're embarrassed? This guy's a gangster? His real name is Clarence.” (8 Mile, Marshall Mathers). In this instance, “B-Rabbit” won the rap battle because he successfully insulted Papa Doc while also knowing everything Papa Doc was going to say about him; thus taking the rap from him.…show more content…
“Afrika Bambaataa, “…is considered, along with Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc, as the Godfather of Hip Hop, the first rappers and hip-hop deejays in the history” (Durand, Lecture 1) Afrika Bambaataa had many strengths that allowed him to gain the name “Godfather of Hip Hop.” Adam Bradley dictated in The Anthology of Rap that, “Bambaataa’s greatest strength was his eclectic taste and collector’s mentality.” (pg. 16, Anthology of Rap) He created a sound that was new to the time while also mixing in a respectable amount of soul from the past.
