Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, which is a tube that extends from the cecum. It is predominate in 10 to 30 year olds and is more common in males than in females. It is the most common cause of acute abdominal pain. It is most likely caused by an obstruction of the lumen likely from mucus, stool, or parasites. Obstruction from mucus, stool or parasites can lead to venous engorgement, abdominal distention, and the accumulation of bacteria and mucous, leading to possible perforation, gangrene, and peritonitis. Appendicitis manifests with periumbilical pain, followed by nausea, vomiting, and anorexia.
