A Rose for Emily William Faulkner shows a perfect illustration of the old saying, “what goes around comes around” in the short story, A Rose for Emily. Miss Emily Grierson, the main character, doesn’t know why the public eyes look at her the way they do; she also does not know why people act so differently around her. It can be strongly believed it is the way her father treated her while she was growing up. The story only speaks briefly about Emily’s father, but what they did state about him made him seem like a controlling person. He “had loaned money to the town…preferred this way of repaying,” and this shows him taking control of her paying taxes. The reason that Emily acts in this way is again due to the governing nature of her father and the fact that she was raised to think that her family “held themselves a little too high for what they really were.” With Emily’s father being in control of the things in her life, she does not know how to react or converse with other people in an ordinary fashion. Another thing to be addressed is how Emily acted when she chose a man that no one agreed with. They disagreed with Homer Barron, the man that Emily loved, because he was, “a Yankee- a big, dark, ready man, with a big voice and eyes lighter than his face.” The way the story describes Emily and Homer is almost like they are complete and total opposites and should never be associated with each other. Emily’s family didn’t agree with her being with Homer because, “of course a Grierson would not think seriously of a Northerner, a day laborer,” which shows he is in a lower social class from Emily. Emily had to take into thought the opinions of the people around her while she was with Homer. Most likely due to her father, who again, made most of her decisions for her. After his death, Emily didn’t really know how to pick the right guy that actually suited her needs and
