The unnamed grandmother is a main character in Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. The grandmother like many people in society today has character flaws that everyone around her can see but she does not seem to notice. She feels that compared to everyone else she is better than they in every way possible are. Like a child, she tries to manipulate those around her to get her way in things. She is selfish always putting her own needs above everyone else. The grandmother feels that she is superior to those around her. She feels that she is the superior race but also that she is more of a “lady” compared to her daughter in law. In the story it says, “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady.” The grandmother does not say exactly how she feels about the people around her but reading between the lines it can be inferred. She tries to manipulate her son into not going on the trip to Florida. Claiming that it is not safe because the Misfit escaped from prison and they could be in danger if they go on the trip. However, she was not successful and ended up going on the trip anyway. This time it did not work for her but another example of that, she was successful in getting her way.
