Relating Fairy Tales to the Real World
Do you believe fairy tales are only read for entertainment? Or that they don’t have a deeper meaning along the story line? Many versions of Cinderella have a complex moral. In some stories, if the girl passes the test correctly, they usually get to marry the Prince. This may relate to the real world by the test representing an engagement ring or a marriage ring and if the girl passes the test, she gets his hand in marriage. Some may not realize it, but fairy tales always have a specific test that only one girl has the correct solution to in the end.
One variant of Cinderella that this topic applies to is Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm’s “Cinderella”. In this version, Cinderella is a beautiful girl that gets mistreated by her step mother and goes to her mother’s grave to receive her dress and the slippers that she leaves…show more content… In this version, a beautiful girl gets mistreated by her step family. Her fairy god mother grants her wishes and lets her go to the ball where she leaves her glass slipper. The Prince then searches for the mystery girl that fits the slipper and comes to the conclusion that it’s Cinderella (Grant 248). The specific test in this variant is which girl can fit the glass slipper. The step sisters try to self-mutilate, but fail. Cinderella then tries and it fits her perfectly. Therefore, she passes the “test” and gets to marry the Prince. Many people may disagree with my opinion of a specific test being along the story line of a fairy tale. They also may raise an objection and refer to the story “Baba Yaga” as told by Aleksandr Afanasyev, and state that there isn’t a specific test in this variant of Cinderella. Although they are very much true, the majority of the Cinderella variants do have the specific test of only one girl having the correct solution to the “test” the Prince
