The reality of Big Brother Technology has changed how governments and people interact. Technology has enabled governments to more easily control the people. In the science fiction novel 1984 by George Orwell, citizens are controlled by Big Brother through the use of telescreens and the Thought Police. Using this method the Party forces them to think, speak, and act a certain way in order to abide by the Party’s rules. If they do not follow certain guidelines and are caught, they will be vaporized. Through the use of technology, the government has the ability to watch its citizens just as Big Brother does. Totalitarianism as a whole is comparable to Oceania by the government controlling almost everything that the citizens are able to do. Surveillance is used to track the activities of citizens in Oceania, “The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well heard” (Orwell 3). As the telescreens are used in Oceania, cameras and a recent uprising in drones, help the government to keep track of any illegal activity that may be happening. In the U.S, Obama has recently put out a message of internet neutrality, “Ironically there has never been anything other than free and open Internet” (Takala). Being that China and other places around the world do not have internet neutrality, the U.S is lucky enough to have freedom of the internet. Though, this does not exclude surveillance. Two women were recently caught for planning a terrorist attack, in which they were suspected by having had searched on their computers about Islamic State propaganda and the components of different bombs used in past terrorist attacks. These women had been caught using the internet to search terrorist groups, “The women were arrested in Queens, NY after an undercover investigation determined they were trying to build a homemade bomb, according to federal court papers” (Bello).
