Biography of Zora Neale Hurston A Civil Rights activist and a profound author, Zora Neale Hurston was exemplified and applauded especially on Their Eyes Were Watching God, a masterwork of fiction which was remembered and exalted in the late 20th century, a while after it was originally written. This novel illustrates the ups and downs an attractive black woman, Janie Crawford, faces due to a shady marriage, a bewildering trial, and a peaceful conscience. Demonstrating her talent during the time of the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston wrote through the eyes of a confident Black woman. This perspective won much attention and compliments to her work. From reliable sources, Zora Neale Hurston was born on January 7, 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama to a family of two former slaves. Her father was John Hurston, a pastor, and her mother was Lucy Ann. However due to the death of her mother and her father’s remarriage, Hurston lived with quite a few family members for the next few years. Throughout her childhood, Hurston worked quite a few jobs to support herself and her dreams to going to college, like as an actress in Gilbert and Sullivan Company, and even a maid. In 1920, she enrolled at Howard University and, although interested in Anthropology, began her writing career through her college’s magazine article. In 1925, Hurston moved to New York, the nation’s melting pot and adverse Harlem life, where she majored in English and also studied Anthropology at the Barnard College. Her life and living greatly influenced many of her works.
