The war which began in 1914, It broke out between the Great Powers. This was the name for the leading powers in Europe which is Britain, France, Russia, Germany, and Austria-Hungary. Previous wars, such as the French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, had involved as many states and had lasted longer.
