World War 1 is much more complicated than one simple trigger. This is why Gavrilo Princip didn’t not caused World War 1 when he killed the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife but he was this was certainly one of the big triggers which caused a chain of events which led to World War 1.
Over time, countries throughout Europe made mutual defence agreements that would pull them into battle. If one of the countries was to attack, allied countries were made to defend them. Before World War 1, the following alliances existed:
Russia and Serbia, France and Russia, Britain and France and Belgium, Japan and Britain and Germany and Austria-Hungary…show more content… Germany hearing that Russia was mobilizing they’re troops, declared war on Russia. France then had to attack against Germany and Austria-Hungary. Germany attacks France through Belgium making Britain come into war. Then Japan enters the war because of Britain. Later, Italy joined the war because in the years leading up to the war Italy had taken sides with Germany and Austria-Hungary in the Triple Alliance. Italy should have joined the armies of these two nations when the war broke out but didn’t. Then the United States entered the war.
Imperialism is when a country grows in power and wealth by getting additional territories under their control. New territories can be conquered through exploration, infiltration or military defeat. This can sometimes be done with minimal conflict by threating weaker rulers. Before World War 1, Africa and parts of Asia were points of argument amongst the European countries. This was big because of the raw materials these areas could provide. These raw materials could allow the growth of greater empires; this is what led to an increase in conflict that helped push the world into World War
