The Trails of Tears were one of the most discriminating events with the Indians side along with slavery. Tribes of Indians were forced to leave their homes and live on the other side of the Mississippi River. The white settlers were greedy and wanted to grow cotton on the area these tribes were settled. The federal government supported the settlers and forced them to leave their homeland and walk thousands of miles to an area where the government wanted them to reside called the Indian Territory. The Americans once again discriminate another race for their own benefits. The Americans, who lived in the western frontier, sought the Native Indians as a danger. They were to do it peacefully and voluntarily, if one wanted to give up their land and go across the Mississippi. Andrew Jackson ignored this and still forced them to move out. Later on Andrew Jackson used the army to drive out the Choctaw out of the area in the winter. They were the first nation to be forced out of their ancestor land. The Indians were to walk all the way to the Indian Territory. Some were chained and forced to walk in single file lines. They had to travel without food or any supplies. The government showed no mercy and did not help at all. Thousands of people died on the walk to the Indian Territory. This was started to be known as the Trails of Tears. The Indian removal still continued. Then Creeks were driven from their land almost 3,500 creeks died on the way. The Cherokee on the other hand were different. The divided among themselves, some chose to stay and fight back while others chose it was best to just leave the area. Those who chose to listen to the Americans setup a treaty called The Treaty of New Echota. In this treaty they made a deal that their land will be sold for $5 million and also the government helps with relocation. Those who chose to fight objected this treaty and felt betrayed by their people. The chief of the Cherokee tribe, John Ross started a petition.
