Tim O’Brien introduces his book, “The Things They Carried” by first focusing on the tangible-practical items as well as the tangible-symbolic items that his comrades carry with them throughout their service in the Vietnam War. He also brings to the attention of the reader the intangible baggage that accompanies the soldiers throughout their service. He expands on this in order to familiarize the reader with how the war weighs down the soldier both literally as well as symbolically. Although this situation is very different from moving from home and into a war zone as the soldiers had to do, both have similar repercussions: Both I and the soldiers had to decide what is most important to take. Similar to Lieutenant Cross, I brought with me symbols of love from my significant other back home. On my birthday last year, my boyfriend bought me a moon cactus and I used to keep it on a dresser next to my window at home. Now that I live in the dorms, I still keep it on a dresser next to my window. The cactus as well as the location of the cactus is symbolic to me in a sense that although the situation is different, some things will stay the same. In addition to leaving items from my childhood, I decided to leave items from my highschool years as well. I found a big cardboard box in my garage and began to fill it with my high school paraphernalia. This box included my volleyball t-shirts and warm ups, yearbooks, homecoming crown and sash, senior night sash, prom pictures, volleyball pictures, posters, and awards. High school matters because it was a building block, but simultaneously, I consider it to be trivial in comparison to the leaps and bounds I will make in college. Another item I left behind Is my collection of drawing/painting utensils. I decided to do this because although leisurely activities are important to partake in, I wanted to focus my time into getting school work done and completing it to the best of my ability. I wanted to rid myself of distractions. I didn’t want to throw any of these items away because they are important factors that make me who I am today but I decided to leave them at home because I want start over and make new accomplishments and
