The therapeutic alliance is used in psychotherapy patients, and may be the most important part of the treatment, as it is often the best predictor of the outcome of the treatment. The therapeutic alliance is essentially the trust built between the client and the clinician. Having a connection with the client allows for the determining factors that will eventually lead to a positive outcome. This in my opinion making it critical to the outcome of therapy. There are critical elements that go into forming these collaborative client relationships. This goes along with having a good clinician-client relationship as it shows who would be a good fit for the client and allow for the initial alliance between the clinician and the client to be positive. The relationship between the client and the clinician is essential in having the best possible outcome when therapy ends. One must understand that both the client and the clinician have their own ways of thinking, they have their own morals, and other characteristics that will affect how they relate to one another and approach the process. Their personalities will determine the working alliance that is associated with the bond they have, the goals they set, and the task they want to complete. If the connection the two have is not positive the chances of the goals being fulfilled is low. When this takes place it can cause anxiety in the client, halting the treatment process. This should allow for a better relationship from the beginning. When another professional profiles the client and refers them to a clinician best fitting their needs it also allows the clinician to feel more comfortable in the aspect that they will be obtaining clients who have similar moral characteristics. It is easier for the clinician to work with a client who has similar moral issues as the communication will be easier between them. When profiling is done beforehand the clinician will have immediate knowledge on how to connect with their client on an emotional level. Clients should also profile clinicians, looking over several clinicians ahead of making an appointment with one, so that they also feel they will be a good fit. The client needs to have the ability to understand the relationship being built within the first couple appointments so that if they do not feel that the relationship will be successful they can look for another clinician who may better fit their needs. Client matching protects both the client and the clinician. If they are unable to build a trusting emotional relationship the client will not properly divulge information that would allow the clinician to understand them, or create the strategies that would help the client.
