Their Eyes Were Watching God is a novel written by Zora Neale Hurston. This novel follows through a teenage girl named Janie who is trying to see her future that God holds for her. Janie shows that she is unhappy with the life she is living with her grandmother in Eatonville, Florida. Nanny is trying to teach her how to be a mature and responsible woman as a teenager so she will know what to expect when she moves on by herself without adult supervision. The main thing Janie shows she really wants throughout the tale is happiness and wants to find it on her own. Once Janie adventures out to find happiness she meets and marries an old man by the name of Logan Killicks who turns out not to be the good man she thought of him. After the loss of her second husband it is that once again Janie meets a new man named Tea Cake in the beginning they start off as friends but after spending a lot of quality time they start to develop a connection but it isn’t until too long they end up starting a relationship and take it to the next level which is marriage. Their marriage seems to be going well due to the constant love they have for one another and their commitment to being by each other’s side. Janie described her love to “Tea Cake as he looked like the love thoughts of women. He could be a bee to a blossom - a pear tree blossom in the spring. He seemed to be crushing scent out of the world with his footsteps. Crushing aromatic herbs with every step he took. Spices hung about him. He was a glance from God" (Chapter 11, page 101). Janie just mainly of Tea Cake as everything her past two husbands were not in a man and she thanked Tea Cake for being there for her and always standing next to her through the good and the bad when the two hugged it showed a symbol of how all marriages should be. Along the way while the two were out on a fishing trip in a raft on the ocean in a thunder storm tensions started to rise between the two when Janie started to see Tea Cake as carless after they were washed off on shore the end of their marriage came after he held her at gunpoint resulting in Janie to pull out a gun Janie pulled
