The Amazons are shrouded in mystery; their history and origin has had many different interpretations. Some scholars are confident that the tribe was just a grandiose myth created by the Greeks for erotic pleasure and excitement, while others believe that the Amazons were actually based on the nomadic Scythian women warriors. Research and archaeology lean towards the latter. Known as “man-hating, killer virgins,” the Amazons are often seen as exotic and otherworldly.
