Kong: the Eighth Wonder of the World, Again The narrative of King Kong has been a classic since its initial release in 1933, where it captured the world’s interest with its groundbreaking claymation effects and a timeless story about what happens when two worlds collide. Whilst there have been various remakes over the past few decades due to the advancement in technology, it wasn’t until 2005 that Peter Jackson’s version was dubbed to as good if not better than the original. Jackson’s intent however was not to use technology to rewrite the film, but use it to his advantage in order to build on and enhance the elements of the 1933 version of King Kong. Wills O’Brien as the visual effects producer crafted a Rear Projection Unit that would allow the director to shoot the actors against the giant animals and maintain the desired proportions between the interactions of the two parties and thus enhance the narrative. O’Brien’s revolutionary innovation was successful in achieving these proportional scenes such as where Kong and the dinosaur are fighting over Ann; her inferiority was portrayed through the prominence and scale of the large animals behind where she lay. Conversely, when Kong reached for Ann through the hotel window, a large-scale arm was manufactured in order to show the proportion of his arm as opposed to Ann’s tiny body. It was through this early advancement in technology that the narrative of Kong (1933) was unlike any other, due the opportunity O’Brien gave to bring realism to otherwise unrealistic sequences. These techniques were further replicated in Jackson’s Kong (2005) however Obrien’s discovery was developed into green screen technology that allowed Jackson to electronically superimpose the proportions during the interactions of the actors and giant animals.
