Buddhism and Christianity are both religions that have a rich history and millions of devout followers throughout the world. In ways these two religions are similar, being based largely on the teachings of a single man, Buddha in Buddhism and Jesus in Christianity. While they have their similarities, there are many differences that make them unique, especially in their interpretations of the world and the afterlife. It is interesting to see the differences and similarities between these two religions that have a very large following throughout the world. Buddha was engaged in self-discovery where he was looking to change himself. After his confrontation with a sick man he was disillusioned and looked in himself for the answers he was seeking and to change himself (Otto, 1984). This method can be a good one if that person realizes that the answers are not found within one self, or in others, but looked toward the creator of all mankind. Christ did not have to search for wisdom since he was the wisdom and the power of God in the human flesh before and during his coming to earth. God sent him to earth to be a servant to the people, the mankind. Jesus was able to grow in his humanity but from a very early age he knew his purpose and who he was (Otto, 1984). Buddha and Christ refused to find recognition by pandering to the superstitions of those who were seeking to see signs; they both positively forbade miracles and yet they both performed numerable miracles (Otto, 1984). We read that they both walked on the water. The origin of the Buddhist legend can be traced to the allegorical expression of crossing the steam of worldliness (samsâra) and reaching the other side, which is the shore of celestial rest
