The Salvation Army Nonprofit organizations are an essential part of the community in every Nation. Throughout the United States there are millions of Nonprofit Organizations, among the well-known are the Kiwanis Club, The Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army of Lee, Henry, and Glades counties are a part of the Salvation Army International whose purpose is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in his name without discrimination by providing addiction dependency, emergency response, health services, social work, and hope (Mission). The Salvation Army was founded in 1865, by William Boothe, a London Minister, with his wife, Catherine, to “reach for the worst, helping the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute.” Originally he intended on establishing a church where the peasants could attend, however later discovered they did not feel comfortable with the regular churchgoers. Of the thirteen services provided internationally, 9 are provided in our local community. In our county alone, the Salvation Army has assisted in providing disaster relief services, addiction recovery, summer camps, holiday assistance, hospital/medical facilities, shelter, family/ career counseling, vocational training and correctional services (History). The Salvation Army assists more than 33 million individuals throughout the year, over six million during the holiday seasons alone (Program Overview). During the Christmas year of 2014 I volunteered every weekend during the mornings to help raise money, an outstanding amount in two hours, by ringing the bell outside of our local Winn Dixie on Homestead and the Publix by 82.
