What is tetanus?! Tetanus, is a serious infection caused by Clostridium tetani; Also it called lockjaw. Tetanus is different from diseases because it does not spread from person to person while the bacteria are usually found in soil, dust and manure and can enter the body through breaks in the skin and usually cuts or puncture wounds caused by contaminated objects. This bacterium produce a toxin that affects the brain and nervous system, leading to stiffness in muscles. When the Clostridium tetani spores are deposited in a wound, neurotoxin will interferes with nerves that control muscle movement. Also the infection can cause muscle spasms, serious breathing difficulties, and can ultimately be fatal. Causes Spores of the…show more content…
These antibiotics prevent the bacterium from multiplying and producing the neurotoxin that causes muscle spasms and stiffness. But Patients who are allergic to penicillin or metronidazole may be given tetracycline instead of them. In treating muscle spasms and stiffness, the doctor can describe to the patients:- 1-Anticonvulsants - such as diazepam (Valium) which relaxes the muscles to prevent spasms, reduces anxiety, and works as a sedative. 2-Muscle relaxants - such as baclofen which is control drug and used to suppress nerve signals from the brain to the spinal cord, resulting in less muscle tension. 3-Neuromuscular blocking agents which are these medications block the signals from nerves to muscle fibers and are useful in controlling muscle spasms. Medications are like pancuronium and vecuronium. Surgery:- If the doctor find the tetanus wound is very large and can't control it by medication, they may lead to surgically remove as much of the damaged and infected muscle and this is called debridement.
