Whether faced with a match point in tennis or with an X-Ray, my approach remains the same. Aside from the excitement and challenges of facing the unknown, the chain of events that follows in both of these scenarios is defined by similar points: prior knowledge, much practice, as well as (in the case of radiology) a passion for pathophysiology and a profound understanding of the complexity of the human body. Attending morning rounds during my first elective in radiology, it became obvious that all the residents and staff present in the room shared this passion of mine. It would then be only a matter of time before I find my vocation: diagnostic radiology. Early on in my pre-clinical years, I wanted a specialty that would expose me to the intellectual challenges necessary to come up with a proper and timely diagnosis. I discovered the numerous modalities radiologists have to work with on a daily basis. My passion for radiology led me to do an elective in interventional radiology. There, I was exposed to numerous procedures, which required both technical talent and a perfect understanding of anatomy, two aspects I wish to include in my practice. My desire to sharpen my diagnostic skills pushed me to do a diagnostic radiology elective as a fourth year student. With a stronger background in diagnostic imaging, I felt more comfortable when reading imaging studies, and oftentimes had a first look on my own before reviewing with the resident or the staff. My exposure to radiology led me to gain an understanding and an appreciation for the complexity of this field, which represents for me the perfect amalgam of medical knowledge and teamwork centered on providing the best patient
