PTSD is a disorder that causes people who have experienced a traumatic event and is feeling the effects. One of the biggest causes of PTSD is of the soldiers who are returning from war. One of the wars that caused the most amount of cases is the Vietnam war. As a result of this war, “The things they carried” helped me understand Lt. Dan from the movie “Forrest Gump” and how he may be experiencing PTSD. As noticed by many that in the story “The things they carry” most characters have been acclaimed to be experiencing PTSD. The most notable is the author himself, Tim O’Brien. Both Tim and “Forrest Gump’s” military veteran, Lt. Dan, both have a form of PTSD. They both have experienced events in the war that changed their lives. Dan’s PTSD came…show more content…
The moment that developed PTSD on Dan was when Gump saved him after he had lost his legs to a bombshell. The disorder was shown in the scene when Gump and Dan was laying in beds and the Lt. dragged Gump and yelled him, “I should have died out there with my men, but now, I’m nothing but a goddamn cripple! A legless freak! Look! Look! Look at me! Do you see that? Do you know what it’s like not to be able to use your legs?”Dan is experiencing one of the symptoms of the disorder, anger. He is having a breakdown and is blaming it all on Gump. His only reason for war is so that he would be able to die on the battlefield with men. He mentions that “we all have a destiny” and that with this destiny, he has to follow it to the very end. Lt. Dan have “developed PTSD as a result of a traumatic experience may have also sustained a brain injury during that experience” (Health). This relates as well to the characters from “The things we carried” and how the traumatic experience they dealt with led them to have PTSD. O’Brien’s PTSD started at a young ages. The traumatic time that happened in the story for O’Brien was when his younger self saw the dead body of his one true love, Linda. He was doing okay when going to see Linda in her casket, until he…show more content…
Dan and Tim O’brien have shown various instances that they PTSD in them. The symptoms that they were showing were quite substantial in the mind because of what happened to Dan and Tim during their war time. Tim’s symptoms of his PTSD had some differences from Dan. Lt. Dan symptoms were “sleep disruption, anxiety, depression--that are common to many forms of psychic distress” (Boone). The biggest symptoms that was shown was the depression that Lt. Dan was experiencing. He stated in the movie “Oh? Ah, well, before you go, why don’t you get your ass down to the corner and get us another bottle of ripple.” He tells Gump to go get him some more ripple, which is a cheap but strong alcohol. Lt. Dan is trying to help his depression and anxiety by drinking strong alcohol and in any matter, being drunk as much as possible to forget about his past. This would infer that he has flashbacks of the incident and is making him lose sanity due to the remembrance of the day that his life was saved. This is showing throughout the movie numerous times that he will always despise Forrest. This goes along with Tim whenever he killed a man in war. His guilt and shame that he endured knew no bound for how much sadness he had. This is a flashback from a time in war that he wishes never happened. "Like murder, the boy thought. The flashlight made it happen. Dumb and dangerous. And as a result his friend Kiowa was dead." (O’Brien). This is a statement made in the story by Tim comparing the
