In the movie, Promises, filmmaker B.Z. Goldberg meets seven Palestinian children that live in and near Jerusalem. The children who are no more than twenty minutes away from each other live remotely different worlds. Each child has their own belief that separates them from another; Yarko, Daniel, Mahmoud, Shlomo, Sanabel, Faraj, and Moishe. The youngest child in Promises is nine and the oldest is thirteen, the ages in these kids make for blunt opinions throughout the movie. The children make do with what they have and create a unique style of communication. The film constructs a story of seven children who couldn’t cross the borders to meet their neighbors. They express that they are very scared to travel on buses when they go visit their friend who was wounded by a terrorist attack. When visiting their grandfather, they ask him a question that they have been wondering themselves about; does he believe in God? Next, we meet Mahmoud Mazen Mahmoud Izhiman, Mahmoud for short. He says that the Al Aqsa belongs to the Arabs, but the Jews say it’s their land. He also says that in the Koran, it says that the prophet, Mohammed, flew from Mecca to the Al Aqsa Mosque. He visits the Al Aqsa; one of Islam’s holiest shrines. Third is Shlomo, an Orthodox Jew that studies the Torah from 7:30 to 7:30 every day. He believes that when the Messiah comes it will bring peace between the Arabs and Israelis. After praying one day, Shlomo runs into a Palestinian and they both show their curiosity for each other, what could be a fight turns into a burping contest. Sanabel is an Arab training to become a dancer while using the traditional Palestinian dance to tell the story of her people. Her father, a journalist, is in jail and has been for two years without being put on trial or applied
