When I retired from the military, I always thought about my skill set differences between my military police law enforcement operations experience compared to the city, county and state law enforcement operations requirements for another organization. In which, my intentions to pursue another career after graduating from Miami University in a profession that is under tremendous amount of scrutinization from the media and the community citizens nationwide has never deterred me from my dream. This typical love and hate scenario with this profession did not detour me from my ambition to continue to serve my community in the law enforcement capacity. However, the internship piece for the department requires students to pursue this as if you were applying for a position for the department. I started this application process several months ahead of the fall semester to ensure that I had my application in time for the selection process and be in a position to find another resource if this did not work out for me. In which it did. My initial phase with the department started with Deputy Spurlock with the human resource division processes and then my interview with Captain Sons. Captain Sons covered a basic overview of my application and to provide him a brief history about myself. Also, a big emphasis was with the consumption of alcohol and driving. After my interview, I was given a tour of operations and introduced to the staff personnel. At this point, I was immediately scheduled in to see Sheriff Jones. My interview with Sheriff Jones was very informal and covered my military duties, assignments, and responsibilities. Sheriff Jones covered his policies, procedures, and his protocols with the department that included his hiring practices for personnel as part time. However, the mindset that is established by the deputies by the prison atmosphere challenges how a deputy must remain flexible enough to transition out of survivor mode to a guardian mentality by interacting with the general public now. My tenure on the road with the different experience levels of deputies showed how important it is to have outstanding communications or interpersonal communications (IPC) skills while interacting with the public, but still sustaining that survivor mode mixed with a guardian
