Women are treated unfairly by men in a personal and professional setting. This paper will refer to the Saturday Night Lives sketch “Plastic Surgeon” that aired on November 15, 2003. In this sketch Alec Baldwin stars as an unprofessional plastic surgeon named Dr. Frank Landsman. Amy Poehler stars as an insecure woman named Ms. Brennan, who is looking to enhance her breast. In this sketch Dr. Landsman is trying to convince Ms. Brennan that she needs to get bigger implants than she wants. He says the reason she need to go bigger is because it is “What society wants”. Even though this sketch aired over a decade ago it still hold significant meaning in which men view women. Women let men disrespect them instead of standing up for themselves. This is recognized in the sketch when Dr. Frank Landsman says “they will look more natural then you do now, beauty is about proportion.” He is saying by doing an unnatural surgery to her body it will make her look more natural therefor becoming more attractive. Men have contradicted their meaning of being attractive. Because natural is when the body is untouched, and is still the way it is intended to look. But when men try to alter a woman’s looks it becomes less natural, even if it looks better in the men’s perspective. When men criticizes and rejects a woman because of her body type she will start feeling unsatisfied with her body. “80% of women in the U.S. are dissatisfied with their appearance.” As said by Carolyn Coker Ross In the article from World of Psychology “Why Do Women Hate Their Bodies?” Woman will then strive to reach the men’s standards by going as far as surgery.
