Proposed Title (Not exceeding 15 words) Effect of pet ownership on student’s stress, self-esteem, self-efficacy and impact on their academic performance. Purpose Statement (500 words max) Have you ever noticed that you feel much better when you’re around your pet? There is no doubt that this is true. Psychologist at Miami University conducted an experiment to examine the potential benefit of owning a pet among what they called everyday people. They found that ‘’ pet owners, on average, were better off than non-owners, especially when they have a higher-quality relationship with their pets’’. (Allen R. Mcconnell, 2011). From studying 200 participants, they found that there was a tendency for pet owners to have higher self-esteem and self-efficacy than non pet owners. It is important that college students experience less stress as possible and have positive self-esteem and self-efficacy. Especially because stress has been taking up a huge part of people’s lives weather we want it or not. Therefore, the main aim of this research is to find out if owning a pet can have an effect on the level of stress, self-esteem, self-efficacy of college students as well as additional factor of weather the results has an impact on their academic performance. Hypothesis 3: There will be difference between pet owners and non pet owners on the level of Self-esteem. Hypothesis 4: There will be difference between pet owners and non pet owners on the level of Self-efficacy. Hypothesis 5: The effect of pet ownership will have a significant impact on student’s academic performance. Type of Design This research will include correlational study, which is a quantitative method of research, as the research is trying to determine whether there is a relationship between the variables. The method of data collection will be convenient sampling (Cook & Campbell, 1979) where the access to the participants will be gained through the population of undergraduate college students from Dublin Business School.
