Imagine living in a world where 65 million girls’ do not have the basic education that they deserve. Well, believe it or not, in 2003, that was our world (rferl.org). The good news is that more and more people are joining in to help this problem. Our ex-First Lady, Michelle Obama, British actress, Emma Watson, and President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, are all helping to change all of this. They all have sacrificed their time and energy for girls’ education. Michelle Obama, has traveled all over Africa to speak about education and has created a campaign called Let Girls Learn. Growing up, Bachelet’s life was really hard; her father was a general in the Chile air force and he died from a heart attack when she was young. A little later, while she was a student at the University of Chile, Bachelet and her mother were arrested and sent to Villa Grimaldi, a torture chamber. They were arrested because Bachelet secretly worked for Socialist Youth (toughtco.com). In 1975 they were released and she returned back to Chile (britannica.com). Seeing how lack of education often relates to money, as president Bachelet made university education free. She said, “The utmost importance is that nobody is left out of university (reuters.com).” Research on women's education supports Bahcelet's ideas on education: educated women are far more productive at work and it is easier for them to get a job. For example, in India the infant mortality rate of babies whose mothers have received primary education is half that of children whose mothers are illiterate (Unicef.org).
