In a society where all books must be burn to the ground, one book that would be worth saving and becoming that has the most value to the future civilization is Lord of the Flies by William Golding. This literary work is about a group of British schoolboys who are stranded on a tropical island without adult supervision, having to develop their own civilization, establish order and a plan for survival. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding gives us a glimpse of the evil that is rooted in even the most civilized human being, it gives us the insight of a world of how we can lose ourselves without order, rules and responsibility and finally how peer-pressure and fear can affect us even if we know what we are doing is wrong. As without it the nature of sin is free to take over us and our actions and thoughts. Rules, laws and orders are boundaries that keep people in check, keeping them from their true violent selves. As, as soon as people are let outside of those boundaries without rules, outside of the system of punishment and conquests, where they can rome free they can and will become their true sinful self, doing and acting in an unpleasant way. People need structure in their life so that everything does not fall apart and so that society can run the way it should. In Lord of the Flies at the beginning of the book all of the boys who are on the desert island make up rules for everyone to follow. The selected someone to be in charge over seeing and calling the shots, running assemblies by using the conch shell, making sure people had a voice and helping set up shelter until they could be saved. But as days went on and the hope of being saved was soon lost, and the rules got pushed to the side, as people stopped caring as hope was no longer on the horizon. Things escalated fast and civilization was forgotten, they no longer cared or worried about the rules they once agreed on and started doing as they pleased, when they wanted to do it. Fear can make people do the unimaginable, the unthinkable and behave in a way that is not the norm. Fear is a reaction that strips people of their ability to think straight. Fear is a scary thing, people allow it to control them and their life, al-lowing them to do the unthinkable. As fear is probably one of the most dangerous things on this plant, taking over people minds and changing their mind set. There is something to be said about the power of fear, as in the novel the boys on the island were frighten by an imaginary beast and it was the fear that scared them more than an-ything, not the actually beast just the idea of it and that is more dangerous than any beast could possibly have been, because just the idea of it made them do horrible things. Just the thought of it existing made them change and behave in a different manner. The fear, the power of that fear contributed to them doing things they thought they would never do. As the fears got stronger, the boys grow more into savages, their belief in the beast grew stronger, making them loss sight of their civilized selves. In the book you see fear and violence being used to gain power and control over everyone and as the leader inflicted fear to make everyone follow his every command.
