When someone is afraid, they fear that they can’t change. In, “The Lottery”, “A Visit To Grandmother”, and “What, Of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?” the characters, Tessie, Chig’s father, and Sergei all feared of something that they couldn’t change. In, “The Lottery”, Tessie Hutchinson feared that Mr. Summers didn’t give Bill Hutchinson enough time to pick a paper. She also feared that something might happen but she didn’t know what. For example, “ ‘You didn’t give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn’t fair!’ “ (31). Tessie wanted to change Mr. Summers’ mind but she couldn’t. In the story, “A Visit To Grandmother”, Chig’s father feared that his mother wouldn’t accept him to her house because he had ran away. In addition, Chig’s father also feared that his mother only paid attention to his brother, GL. For instance, “ ‘If GL and I did something wrong, you’d beat me first then be too tired to beat him.’ “ (189).
