Societal Connections Between North Korea and Animal Farm Leaders Abusing Power Napoleon uses his new status to gain a lot more power than the other animals in a society where everyone is supposed to be equal. Napoleon and the other pigs begin to trade with humans for the benefit of themselves. Napoleon starts to use human items including sleeping in human beds, wearing human clothes, and drinking alcohol. While no other animals are allowed to engage in these activities. Napoleon continues to alter the commandments to benefit himself, without telling the other animals. One example is when he changed the commandment "No animal shall sleep in a bed " to "No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets" (Orwell 67). This allows him and the other pigs…show more content…
The Use of Violent Tactics Animal Farm One of the main reasons Napoleon kept in power was the use of violent tactics to strike fear in the animals. Napoleon really set off his dictatorship by banishing Snowball from the farm. Napoleon used the dogs to chase him out. The Hens on the farm were being overproduced for eggs. The Hens began to "strike" and no longer produce eggs. After being cut short of food, eventually some of the Hens were executed. A commandment was even altered to make these executions sound more acceptable to the animals of the farm. The commandment went from "No Animal shall kill another animal" to "No Animal shall kill another animal without cause"(Orwell 91). Execution became more common on the farm. Any disloyalty at all would result in execution. Animals would often be forced to confess to things the didn't even do. The executions took place to keep fear in the animals. Government Propaganda Animal Farm Propaganda was one the main reasons Napoleon was able to stay in power. Squealer being his main source. The average animal would believe squealers statements. Much like propaganda today. In Animal Farm, Squealer tricks the animals into thinking that the pigs need more milk and food than the rest of society for the benefit of the whole farm. Napoleon convinces the rest of the farm that snowball is the cause of all of the farms problem. Including the destruction of a windmill they built, that was really destroyed by a storm. When the commandments kept getting altered, the animals would question the authority. Squealer just told the animals that they have always been like that, and its their poor memory. Government Propaganda North Korea How could a dictator as crazy as Kim Jong Il stay in power? The answer would be propaganda. Kim Jong Il has full control of all media in North Korea and is able to give the public all sorts of misleading information. Even things as crazy as him altering the weather. When mysterious air messages promoting democracy arrived in some areas of North Korea, the government released a statement saying that these messages will burn your hands if picked up. Propaganda is used in North Korea to create enemies by accusing them of crazy things. Similar to Napoleon accusing Snowball of many actions.
