Myocardial Infarction (MI) also commonly known as a heart attack occurs when the heart is starved of oxygen. Heart disease in itself is number one leading cause of death in the United States in 2014 with 611,105 deaths according to the CDC. MI is not only affecting people in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s but has grown to affect a much broader population with individuals in there 20’s and 30’s now suffering from their first heart attack. The many commonly known risk factors are not present in 25% of cases with MI, which leads our research to focus on other factors that may contribute to MI. There are many risk factors associated with MI, some of the well-known risk factors include age, (men aged 45 and older, women aged 55 or older), tobacco, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, family history, lack of physical activity and obesity. However, there is an additional risk factor that may also contribute to MI which, is employment status.…show more content…
The current research revolving around MI is the well-known risk factors that was briefly mentioned above, however we are interested in exploring risk factors that have not been overlooked and given less attention. MI is now affecting younger population without risk attributed to MI, almost 25% or MI cases are not associated with the commonly known risk factors.
