Anxiety. At the time of the interview, Mr. E experienced a great deal of anxiety. As he took advantage of his veterans’ school benefits, he worked two jobs. When not going to school or working, again, Mr. E isolated himself. While isolating himself from others, he drank while watching television. In doing so, Mr. E would allow his school work to buildup, contributing to further anxiety. Mr. E did not exercise any self-care; his nutritional intake consisted of fast food, candy, soda, and alcohol. Consequently, Mr. E often felt overwhelm, shame, and denial over his current state of being. Moreover, Mr. E’s behaviors and thoughts fueled his physical symptoms of self neglect, weight gain, and greater anxiety. Posttraumatic Stress.…show more content…
E’s current environment possesses both strengths and weaknesses in regards to his AUD. In his environment, it is likely that pressure will be put upon Mr. E to drink despite his physical dependence. Mr. E is a Hispanic American and there is pressure from his family and community to act in a culturally traditional male fashion; it is expected that men have control over their drinking habits. Furthermore, a few members of Mr. E’s family drink and use drugs. Additionally, most of the food markets in Mr. E’s area double as liquor stores. Altogether, it is likely that Mr. E’s environmental factors contribute to his reluctance to enter alcohol treatment or a twelve-step program. The city, where Mr. E lives, can also be a detriment to his posttraumatic symptoms. Mr. E lives in the vicinity of the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles; he is surrounded by poverty and several gangs. Although it may appear that Mr. E is content with his living arrangement, the possibility of violence is never far off. As people who have been diagnosed with PTSD often lack a feeling of security (APA, 2013), drive-by shootings, fireworks, muggings, theft, and personal violence are possible triggers to Mr. E.
