The point to Morrie’s experiment was to show how we are affected by silence. The results showed that the vast majority of us are embarrassed or uncomfortable when left in a completely silent environment. After fifteen minutes, Morrie proposes, “Why is it that we are embarrassed by silence and why do we find comfort in noise” and allows them to discuss. I believe that this was an effective teaching method. The way Morrie orchestrated it left the class unaware of what they should do proving his point on the effects of silence. Personally, silence is something that I am more comfortable with. Like Mitch, I often have a hard time sharing my viewpoints and feelings with other individuals outside of a small personal group.
