Everybody’s an antagonist in life The story of “Love Medicine” features very round and dynamic characters. Because it shows the family over a period of many years, it shows how the characters develop and change throughout their lives. It shows how complex the characters are because it shows them from several characters perspectives and in several events. One event could also be shown multiple times. All of this makes the characters all stick out, so it is difficult to determine which specific characters stand above the others as the protagonist of the novel. I viewed Marie, Lulu, Albertine, and Lipshaw as being possible protagonists, and each protagonist would have several antagonists relative to them. She could be the protagonist because she has major connections with the many of the other characters. Foremost, she is a daughter in law to Rushes Bear, which Rushes Bear shows when she tells her son that she “only [has] a daughter” (101). Additionally, she adopted June for a little bit. This is shown when the story is told about her other kids trying to hang June, and then June called Marie “a damn old chicken” (22) after Marie saved her. Moreover, she has an antagonistic relationship with Lulu because Nector was “seeing Lulu also” (156). When she is viewed as the protagonist of the story,, the story would have multiple antagonists. He has several factors that make him a possible protagonist. Most importantly, he has a special ability that he calls the love medicine. He states that he’s “got the touch” and was “born with it” (227). Additionally, he will help create the future because he is one of the younger generation. Because he “[lives] on dry land” that does not “[solve] all [his] problems” (333) he would have to solve his own problems in the future. This shows that he has not solved all his problems and the story ends without closing for him. The story would have several antagonists with Lipshaw as the protagonist. Foremost, he viewed his mother, June, as an antagonist. He stated that he “would not relent on [his mother]” (39) if she went up to him and apologized. Later in the story after he learns that June was his mother he did what he thought “[his] mother would have wanted [him] to” (298) do. In addition, he has a lot of problems with King. King would do things like hiding in a bush and taking a “potshot” (38) at Lipshaw. Later in the story he finds out that a lot of it was because he “was King’s half brother” (298), but they then grow closer until Lipshaw takes June’s car from gambling although King “didn’t want to play for the car” (323). Moreover, Lipshaw himself is somewhat of an antagonist. Lipshaw has problems in the novel because he does not know himself, as Lulu says, “Just troubled. You never knew who you were” (303), or his culture
