William Golding, the author of the novel Lord of the Flies, conveys the universal theme of civilization vs. savagery by the use of a well written plot, the setting on a deserted tropical island and most of all, how the characters change over time. Golding starts out with a group of boys who are stuck on an island dealing with human instincts that exist within all of them. The hardest part of going through the journey is these young, civilized boys are freely imposed with no adults or authority. They decide to hold meetings and try to gain authority by directly voting on a chief. However, this leads to more chaos and causes them to turn on each other. Ralph blows the conch, a shell that they use as a symbol to have a meeting. Everyone begins to show their frustration and aggravation, due to the fact that they are not able find any meat or food in the jungle. However one child, Jack, has become obsessed with finding a “beast” that is known to be somewhere around the island and slaughtering it. This is led to be the first most obvious example of savagery. The boys have become infatuated with hunting and killing living animals that it has come before creating the fire as a signal to ships to rescue them. Ralph is the logical boy that believe that making a fire to be rescued is more important than killing pigs and creating verses of songs. Jack’s group is symbolism for civilization vs. savagery. At the end of the novel, the word civilized has dispersed. The tropical island has turned into a battlefield of hunting not only animals, but each other. Simon is the first one to realize that this “beast” is actually just something that is part of each boy. Each boy is proven to have a part of savagery in them. Before Simon can tell the others this, he is savagely killed by the hunters. At the end of all of the chaos that arises, the savages are alive, and a few others. The savage hunters have made it an obvious point to hunt Ralph next. However, as Ralph is in hiding he spots a naval ship along the water. This lead him to begin a fire and hope that the officers on the ship will see it as a signal of help. The naval ship noticed the fire and comes to rescue Ralph and a few other civilized boys, the rest of the savage hunters were left on the deserted tropical island to fend for
