Langston Hughes is one of America’s greatest poets/writers known today. He is most famous for his writing style and about has often wrote about the lives of middle and lower class African Americans in America to celebrate and define the beauty of African Americans that transcended racial stereotypes. Hughes is widely regarded as the “Bard of Harlem” for vividly capturing the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes is one of the most prolific African American writers of the 20th Century and possibly the first to earn his living entirely by means of his craft.” (Loessy, 2014). Langston Hughes is a great American author because he has helped shape American Literature and politics through his creative and poignant poetry, novels, plays, and essays. Mr. Hughes is known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance era. Most of his writings spoke about the poor African Americans who lived during this era. He often wrote about strength, courage, resilience, and even humor. “Thank You, Ma’am” is one of his most famous short stories that touched on some of these characteristics. This piece resembles the life of many African Americans who lived during this time period. “If you give someone freedom to make decisions on their own, they decide for the better most of the time. When people are limited off from something, restricted, even if it’s for their own good, they feel the need to do what they are not allowed out of curiosity or other reasons in order to not take their opportunity for granted.” This story relates to the day and age when he wrote this work.
