Just An Ordinary Girl Daysi Aleman was born November 10, 1971, eight years before the start of the Nicaraguan Civil War. The year was 1986, in what she would call, “un pequeño pueblo” or a small village, Daysi would spend her days teaching old farmers and villagers to read and write, being one of the few in the pueblo that knew how to do it correctly. She felt that the process of watching the old folks learn was very intriguing and teaching them was one of her greatest joys. What wasn’t a joy though were the threats she received by the Nicaraguan government, and in-turn the army. She recounts that many of the older, adult teachers would be murdered by the Nicaraguan army, the Contras, because they would teach about a time when life was prosperous and when people weren’t living in the grip of poverty, a time before a dictator ruled with an iron-fist. As a 15 year old, Daysi didn’t really worry herself too much with the politics of the time, and therefore, only taught the elderly people to read and write.
