Summer of My German Soldier, a novel about a 12 year old Jewish girl, Patty Bergen, during World War II. This story took place in Jenkinsville, Arkansas usually at Patty’s house or her father’s store. She had a black maid named Ruth who was a mother role for Patty because her mother didn’t spend much time with her. Patty didn’t have a good relationship with her parents for her father beat her for doing the wrong things and her mother stood and watched. The genre of this book is young adult fiction. Soon enough the news was out that a POW had escaped the prison camp and was on the loose. The FBI was investigating the case and went to her father’s store to question people. The FBI questioned Patty and she told them what she remembered, leaving out the part where he bought the pin. The FBI left with no suspicions, but then a reporter came to the store to find the sheriff. Patty and the reporter, Charlene Madlee, talked and soon became friends because Patty told her she’d want to be a reporter one day. Charlene then takes Patty to the prison camp to see what it’s like to be a reporter. Patty goes to visit Anton and bring him food, but she becomes angry because she thinks that Anton is only nice because she’s hiding him. After leaving the hideout a boy named Freddie Dowd came to play, but her father didn’t like this.
