When Ezra is at his school the night before school is supposed to start, he thinks, "I was done. I left the balls on the court, zipped my racquet back into my gear bag, and picked up my cane, wondering why I'd even bothered" (16). Ezra is discouraged because he thinks that he will never be able to play tennis again and that his friends won't want to hang out with him now that he can't play. All of his hopes of proving the doctors wrong about playing tennis were crushed which made him feel even more hopeless about his future. When Ezra is reminiscing about his life before his accident and what is different in the after math, he thinks, "I had been Ezra Faulkner, the golden boy, but that person no longer existed" (13). The reader can infer that Ezra is discouraged and insecure about the situation that he is in. Before his big accident, everyone knew him as the tennis player who got whatever girl he wanted. Now everyone knows him as the guy his girlfriend cheated on and got in a car accident all in the same night. He is insecure of the way that people are looking at him and judging him. However as Ezra feels more comfortable he is able to enjoy himself
