Maya Angelou once said, “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people.” Heroes will always help someone in need. A hero also never gives up, no matter how rough times may be. Although heroes can have superpowers, a true hero will always fight for the greater good, no matter what the consequences might be. A hero works to help other people in need. First of all, in the poem, “Frederick Douglass” Robert Hayden shows the reader how Frederick Douglass fought for equality for slaves. Frederick Douglass kept fighting and fighting in order to have all races be treated equally. In the poem, “The Man” the poet, Nina Cassian wrote, “... he set himself to do everything with twice as much enthusiasm…” (Cassian 15-16) Instead of being gloomy and looking at everything negatively, the man decided to become optimistic. The reason why the man decided to become optimistic is because he did not want his arm to hold him back, he wanted to keep moving forward. Additionally, in the epic, “The Odyssey” Homer wrote, “Cyclops, you asked my name, and I will tell it: give me afterwards a guest gift as you promised. My name is Nobody. Nobody, my father, mother and friends call me.”(Homer 15) When Odysseus and his men were in danger he tricked the cyclops into believing his name was Nobody. This shows that Odysseus is a true hero because by being clever he saved his men. On the other hand, in the movie, The Lion King, Simba can be defined as brave because he accepted the call to go back to Pride Rock and face scar. By going back to Pride Rock Simba shows the audience that he will do whatever it takes to protect his pride. Accepting the call shows how Simba realized that while his pride was lead by Scar, they were starving and were miserable, and when he finally did something to save his friends and family, he became a hero. For instance, in the Pixar movie, Finding Nemo, Marlin is looking for someone to help him look for his son, and Dory was the only fish that wanted to. While helping Marlin, Dory knew she wouldn’t be getting anything in return, but still continued to help. In addition, when Dory was helping Marlin she never wanted anything in return and helped him out of the kindness in her heart. Furthermore, in the news article, “Soldier home after losing his leg in Afghanistan” the journalist, Gale Fiege, wrote about how Tristan Eugene Segers lost his leg while in the army and did not want anything but to be treated equally. When Segers lost his leg while out on the battlefield he did not expect some fancy medal to be given to him. In addition, when Segers lost his leg he didn’t want a medal, he just wanted to be treated as an equal. Lastly, in the sermon, “White House Funeral Sermon for Abraham Lincoln” Dr. Phineas D. Gurley talks about how Abraham Lincoln has died, but what got him killed will live on. Abraham Lincoln was fighting for slaves rights, and he ended up succeeding, and during the entire time that he was fighting he knew he wouldn't get anything in return. This is what made him a true hero, the fact that even though he knew he would get nothing in return for doing the right thing, he still did it.
