CHAPTER 2 INTRODUCTION TO ZAKAT AND ZAKAT ASSISTANCE SCHEME 2.1 ZAKAT AS PILLAR OF ISLAM Islam is a complete and comprehensive system for human life and nature where every Muslim is required to follow and practice the teachings. There are 5 pillars of Islam which are shahadah, prayer, zakat, fasting and hajj. Zakat included as one of the pillar of Islam and as an obligation to every Muslim to act and carry out the responsibilities (Ataina & Achmad, 2010). Zakat in linguistic meaning is growth and increase. Therefore when it is applied to a person, it means to improve or to become better which basically being understand as a blessing, a cleanser and betterment in variety aspect (Zulfiqar, 2011). Abdullah bin Umar said that Prophet Muhammad PBUH narrated: عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ بُنِيَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ عَلَى أَنْ يُعْبَدَ اللَّهُ وَيُكْفَرَ بِمَا دُونَهُ وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَحَجِّ الْبَيْتِ وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ "Islam is built upon five pillars: Shahada is no God except Allah and Muhammad the messenger of Allah, establish regular prayers, pay zakat, fasting Ramadan and performing hajj ...”. (Sahih Muslim:19) Hence, Obligation to carry out zakat is a religious obligation and its implementation is intended to preserve the religion. In a study of Asmah, Muslimah, Huzaimah, & Nafisiah (2013), stated that they claimed that the zakat payment is based on four objective. The first objective is to eliminate poverty and sustain the socioeconomic justice.
