There is a risk in everything we do. As individuals we carry out risk assessments subconsciously all the time, for example, where, how, and when to cross the road. It is important to know the risks and to ensure that there is a real reduction in the exposure of workers and we are just not replacing one risk with another. Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect the business, if output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or the owner has to go to court. Therefore risks are required to be assessed in workplaces so that the plan is put in place to control them. It should simply be conducted before employees conduct some work which presents a risk of injury or ill-health.
