Freedom isn’t given it’s earned. Jim has earned his freedom through many things, but what is his freedom compared to Huck? Huck and Jim are both heading for freedom, but what kind of freedom do they both want. They both want to be free, but they want to be free from different things. There can be different meanings of freedom to different people. It just depends who you are and your beliefs. Some people have different meanings of freedom. Jim has been through alot in this novel. He is looking for freedom. His definition of freedom is not having to be a slave. He doesn’t want to be sold. Slaves were big back then. A lot of blacks would try to escape and go north. Some of these points came when he was talking about freedom. Huck wanted to be free from his aunt. Jim wanted to be free from his master. Freedom to me is the right to talk and think as you feel. Freedom of speech; having the ability to talk about whatever you want. Freedom isn’t given away though. Freedom is earned through hard work. Freedom was fought for in the Civil War. The Civil War was a big war. It was a long battle to end slavery. Slavery was big back then. White people would own black people and make them work for them. They would make them work for FREE! The slaves were property. They didn’t get treated like normal human beings. They didn’t get the same things the whites did. If the black people did something their owner didn’t like, they would most likely get beat for it. Their owners usually didn’t like them. Jim was a slave for Huck’s aunt. Huck loved Jim. Jim was Huck’s best friend. When Huck fakes his own death, Jim was gonna be sold so Jim ran away. They ended up meeting up with each later in the novel on the island Huck was on.
