Why Should Students Read Animal Farm George Orwell’s book Animal Farm is an important book that all high school students should read. The book is about…. Students can take a lot from this story and learn how easily people (in this case animals) can be corrupted. It’s great for learning because it’s teaches how people in power can abuse authority, it’s simple to read and it teaches literary devices. The book starts off with the animals taking control over the farm and the pigs becoming the leaders since they were the smartest animals on the farm. The pigs learned how to read and write and came up with the following commandments to live by. “1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. 2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. 3. No animal shall wear clothes. 4. No animal shall sleep in a bed. 5. No animal shall drink alcohol. 6. No animal shall kill any other animal. 7. All animals are equal.” (Orwell 24) Snowball and Napoleon were in charge and eventually Napoleon was the only one. By the end of the story Napoleon was a dictator and had change the commandments to one single command, “ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.” (Orwell 134) Also the simplicity of the story makes this a great book for young minds.
