“‘Maybe,’ he said hesitantly, ‘maybe there is a beast ... maybe it’s only us..’ Simon became inarticulate in his effort to express mankind’s essential illness.”(126) In his novel, William Golding addresses that humans possess an innate evil-- a primitive beast within. He introduces British children in the moments following their plane crash. At the onset, the boys are naive and delighted with the island they are on. Despite the ugly scar left by the man-made plane, this desolate island is beautiful. However this innocent mindset is short lived; when introduced to a lifestyle driven by their ability to survive, an instinctive evil surfaces. After the excitement of the kill of a sow subsides, Jack shows the hunters his palms which are streaked with the blood of their kill. “He giggled and flicked them while the boys laughed at his reeking palms.”(195) Earlier in the novel, Golding describes Jack’s response to their first kill. “..[his] mind was crowded with memories; memories of the knowledge that had come to them when they closed in on the struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away its life like a long satisfying drink.”(98) The boys are no longer interested in killing for survival. “Now out of the terror rose another desire, thick, urgent, blind. ‘Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!’”(219) They are killing from a growing sense of primitivity; an urgent desire to exert dominance and power. To spill blood.
