Aubrey Kern HL History IA “To What Extent Were the Moscow Olympic Games Affected by Cold War Tensions?” WC: 2087 IDENTIFICATION AND EVALUATION OF SOURCES The identification will be “ To what extent were the Moscow Olympic Games of 1980 affected by Cold War tensions?” and will analyze to what extent communism (Soviet Russia) affected the United State’s participation in the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. The issue of communism can be discussed broadly in terms of the Cold War as a whole, but for the purposes of this investigation it focus solely in the threat of withdrawal of the US from the Games, if the Soviet’s did not withdraw from Afghanistan. Thus, The Cold War and the Olympic Movement by Christopher Hill and Dropping the Torch: Jimmy Carter the Olympic Boycott, and the Cold War by John Barnhill are very valuable sources to this investigation, due to the insight they give on the effect communism (Soviets) had on the Games, the reasons behind Carter’s threat to withdraw from the GAmes, and background behind the tensions leading up to the Games. In an attempt to get the Soviets to retreat from Afghanistan, he threatened to withdraw the United States completely from the Moscow Games if they did not retreat from February 20, 1980. Despite this threat, the Soviets remained in Afghanistan past the deadline, and Carter confirmed the US boycott from the Games. The Soviets caused such an uproar, that the US was joined in its boycott by Japan, West Germany, China, the Philippines and Canada. The United Kingdom, France and Greece supported the boycott but allowed their athletes to participate if they wished.
